Vaccinations for dogs and cats

At Paws Plus Mobile Vets, we prioritise the health and well-being of your pets by protecting them against common diseases through vaccinations. Below, we outline our vaccination recommendations for dogs and cats.

Dog vaccinations

For dogs, we offer two types of vaccinations. The C3 (Core) vaccination provides protection against Parvovirus, Hepatitis, and Canine Distemper. For more comprehensive coverage, the C5 vaccination also includes protection against non- core kennel cough (Parainfluenza and Bordetella).

Core vaccines for dogs

The core vaccine, known as the C3, offers your dog immunity for three years after the initial round of puppy vaccinations. Core vaccines are those that are considered essential for all dogs, regardless of their lifestyle or geographic location, because they protect against diseases that are widespread and/or pose significant risks to dog’s health. The components of the core C3 vaccine are:

Parvovirus

A serious and often fatal disease causing hemorrhagic (bloody) diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, dehydration, and shock.

Hepatitis Virus

A contagious disease affecting the liver and kidneys, leading to lethargy, vomiting, loss of appetite, and liver failure and possibly death.

Canine Distemper

A highly contagious disease causing generalised illness. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, fever, seizures, neurological damage, and death.

Non-Core vaccines for dogs

On the other hand, non-core vaccines are those recommended based on the individual dog’s risk factors such as geographic location, lifestyle and exposure to disease. While generally not fatal, these diseases can cause severe distress for both the dog and the owner. At Paws Plus, we recommend vaccination for Canine Cough due to the significant discomfort and illness it can cause.

The components of the non-core Vaccine Canine Cough (KC) providing 12 months of immunity are:

Parainfluenza Virus

A highly contagious component of kennel cough, causing influenza-like symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, fever, lethargy, and pneumonia or chest infections.

Bordetella

Another highly contagious component of kennel cough, similar to “whooping cough” in humans, leading to severe illness and coughing in dogs.

Puppy Schedule

Puppies require a series of three vaccination boosters, followed by annual boosters throughout their lives. Some vaccine components provide immunity for three years, while others require annual boosters.

The PawsPlus Recommended Vaccination Schedule for Puppies:

  • 6-8 weeks: Protech C4 (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvo-virus & Parainfluenza)
  • 10-12 weeks: Protech C4 & Bronchi-Shield Oral (Bordatella)
  • 14-16 weeks: Protech C4
  • First Annual Visit: Protech C4 & Bronchi-Shield Oral

Adult Dog Schedule

Vaccination Schedule for Adult Vaccinated Dogs

  • Triennial (every 3 years): Protech C4 & Bronchi-Shield Oral

Cat vaccinations

For cats, we recommend the F3 vaccination, which protects against Feline Herpes Virus, Feline Panleukopenia Virus, and Feline Calicivirus. For outdoor cats, we also strongly recommend vaccination against Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV).

Cat vaccinations

Feline Panleukopenia Virus

A serious and highly contagious disease causing vomiting and hemorrhagic (bloody) diarrhea.

Feline Herpes Virus

A severe upper respiratory tract disease resulting in sneezing, nasal discharge, fever, and conjunctivitis.

Feline Calicivirus

Similar to herpes virus, causing severe upper respiratory symptoms along with oral ulceration and pneumonia.

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV)

A virus that compromises the immune system, making cats more susceptible to infections and certain cancers.

Kittens

Kittens also require a series of three vaccination boosters, followed by annual boosters for life.

Vaccination schedule for kittens under 8 weeks of age

  • 1st Vaccination: F3 (+/- FIV) at 6-8 weeks of age.
  • 2nd Vaccination: F3 (+/- FIV) at 12-14 weeks of age.
  • 3rd Vaccination: F3 (+/- FIV) at 16-18 weeks of age.
  • First Annual Visit: F3 (+/- FIV)

For Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) protection, a series of three injections is required, given 2-4 weeks apart, followed by yearly boosters. Kittens over six months of age will need a blood test before receiving the initial FIV series to ensure they are not already infected.

Vaccination schedule for kittens over 8 weeks of age

  • 1st Vaccination: F3 (+/- FIV)
  • 2nd Vaccination 4 weeks after the 1st: F3 (+/- FIV)
  • Annually: F3 (+/- FIV)
